“Is there anything better than butter?
Think it over: When you taste something delicious beyond imagining and you say, “What is in this?”, the answer is always going to be, Butter.”
~Julie Powell
The very two things I dread most are running out of Milk and Butter. My boys drink milk like its going out of style… and butter, well, it speaks for itself. I have already mastered getting milk on demand and it was now time to see just how fast we could make butter. Most articles will tell you to use a KitchenAid mixer or a butter churn, but take my advice, if you have little kids, use Grammy’s method:
One morning, as I was dropping off my boys to their Grammy, I delivered to her a gallon of milk. I figured she would make something yummy with it but I left it up to a surprise. When I returned, she happily showed me BUTTER. The best part? My two year old did most of the work! She explained that she put the skimmed cream into a jar, tightened the lid, and told the Littles to jump around with it and shake it. Brilliant!
The husband was quite skeptical about shaking cream into butter, so of course he had to try it. He vigorously shook the jar for about 10 minutes and sure enough, he saw this inside:
We shook a little more until we figured it was about done. Guess what the remaining liquid is in the jar? Buttermilk.
Yep, pancakes were up next!
I pressed and flipped the butter until most of the liquid was out. I then added salt…and voila! It was perfect.
My tools:
A mason jar.
My antique butter paddle.
The cutest little antique butter press.
